How do you recognize an item of clothing in organic fabric?. The only way to recognize that a garment is made with organic cotton is to check the label. Only the presence of a recognized certification can guarantee that that garment contains organic cotton.
There are 3 most popular and globally recognized certifications for organic cotton: OCS, OCS 100 and GOTS. These certifications can be requested voluntarily by companies wishing to certify their products as "organic" and are issued by independent companies, following the provisions of current international legislation. To issue the certification and therefore on the label of the final product there is the writing "organic cotton", a check is carried out on the entire production chain: from cultivation, to production, up to distribution, everyone must comply with the quality standards required by law .
On the item of clothing or product you must therefore find:
- the mandatory sewn label indicating the 100% cotton composition
- an additional label, which can also be in paper, indicating that the cotton is certified organic
In the case of GOTS certified products, you can also check the actual certification thanks to the label: in this way you will be sure that that product contains at least 70% certified organic cotton. The label must contain, in addition to the GOTS logo, the "Organic" classification type, the references on the certifying body and the license number.
On the GOTS website it is possible to consult the database free of charge to verify, thanks to the data shown on the label, license, manufacturer, product and certifier.
